Opening General Session Keynote: Foresight and Vision for a Future Ready Practice

Session Title: Opening General Session Keynote: Foresight and Vision for a Future Ready Practice
Session Code: GST0119
Date: Thursday, October 17, 2019
Time: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
LU/HSW: 1 LU

When considering the future, we never have the benefit of knowing how the story comes out. To make matters worse, the content of the story is hard to see. We must infer a picture from disconnected bits of the present.

News about trends and shifts in economics, politics, technology, society, the environment, and our industry give us glimpses into possible futures, but offer little clarity or context. How can we be sure we are paying attention to only relevant information? How do we discern between trends that could be cataclysmic, peripheral, or somewhere between? What opportunities are hidden in the challenges we see?

In recent years, trends and shifts in the industry have created both existential threats and unprecedented possibilities for architects and designers. Emerging technologies both endanger traditional financial models and enable architects to create value in new ways. New entrants into the design marketplace threaten to displace traditional firms yet show the way to alternative models of practice. The danger of passivity is greater than ever. But for firms willing to embrace change, the possibilities for greater relevance and influence are tremendous.

Through its research and interaction with hundreds of firms per year, DesignIntelligence has seen how leading firms are anticipating the future. This session will cover the essentials of how exemplars use foresight and vision to see, understand, and leverage trends and change to thrive in a rapidly shifting marketplace.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • List three key trends that may affect the business of architecture,
  • Interpret how foresight and the future needs of the market affect the vision for practice,
  • Explain the role of vision development in successfully managing a practice.
